Home Ground
Some sessions have a built-in advantage: the location is already personal before the first frame is taken. Savanna's senior portraits were done at her family's Corkins Lodge at the Brazos — deep in the pine forest of Northern New Mexico, where the Rio Brazos runs cold through the canyon and the cliffs rise above everything.
Those cliffs are not just beautiful. If you've seen Marvel's Logan, you've already seen this land. Parts of the film's forest scenes were shot here, in these same pines, under this same canopy. It's the kind of place that feels cinematic because it is.
We started inside the lodge, then moved into the forest — through the pines and the tall grass, past the river already going quiet and still with the first November freeze. The water wasn't fully iced over, but close. You can see it in the photographs: that particular gray-white stillness that only happens when a mountain river is deciding whether to keep moving.
By the time the sun dropped behind the ridge, we were in the field with fairy lights. Then one final frame by the water — Savanna holding the lights in the blue dark, the Brazos Cliffs glowing deep red behind her, the river holding the last of the sky.
