The Meadow Was Ready Before They Were

Some sessions ask you to chase the light. This one had it waiting. John and Missy drove up into the Cumbres high country with brand new boots still stiff from the box, and by the time they stepped out into Trujillo Meadows, the evening sun was already coming in low and gold across the grass, like it had been holding a spot for them. There's a particular kind of quiet up there — no cell signal, no other cars, just wind moving through the meadow and a river cutting through it somewhere close by. It felt less like a scheduled session and more like the two of them had simply wandered into good light and we happened to be standing there with cameras.

Wild Grass, a Little Water, and Nowhere to Be

The meadow at Trujillo Meadows doesn't stay still for a photograph — the grass moves, the light shifts, and a small mountain stream cuts right through the middle of it, rocky and shallow enough to cross on foot. Missy's dress caught the breeze and the hem picked up a little water at the creek's edge; nobody minded. John kept one hand at the small of her back the whole way across, more out of instinct than posing. Behind them, the burned tree line from an old fire climbed the ridge in silver-grey, and past that, blue mountains stacked all the way to the horizon. It's the kind of backdrop that doesn't need dressing up.

A Kiss on the Forehead, a Hat Tipped Low

John wore his white straw cowboy hat the entire evening, tipping it back with two fingers whenever he needed a clearer look at Missy, which was often. The best frame of the night almost wasn't a kiss at all — he pressed his mouth to her forehead instead, eyes closed, hat brim nearly touching her hairline, and she laughed right in the middle of it, caught somewhere between the kiss and the joke that came before it. That's the moment that stays: not the posed kiss a few frames later, good as it was, but the one where she couldn't keep a straight face.

Running Through the Gold

As the sun dropped further behind the ridge, we asked them to just walk — no direction, no destination, straight through the waist-high brush toward the far end of the meadow. John led the way holding Missy's hand, both of them laughing at how the ground kept trying to trip up those new boots, the sky behind them streaked orange and blue in a way that didn't need any help from us. That last stretch of light in Trujillo Meadows is short, maybe fifteen minutes before it's gone, and it's the kind of light that makes an ordinary walk through the grass look like the whole point of the evening.

John and Missy — thank you for hauling your new boots all the way up into the Cumbres for us, and for letting the meadow do most of the work. That forehead kiss is the one we'll keep coming back to.
